Train link plans take a step forward

Doncaster Council's planning committee has given Robin Hood Airport the green light for a new rail station near the hub. The station, which still needs to clear several hurdles, would be located on the Doncaster to Lincoln line a few hundred metres from the airport terminal.
The station would be two platforms - a change from the original proposal for a single platform, which proved too expensive in signalling costs. A 250- space car park is part of the initial design, with a shuttle service between the station and the terminal building.
Clare Wilson, the airport's environmental manager, said: ‘We are delighted with the news that this important facility is nearer to reality. 7% of our passengers already use public transport, which is really positive when you consider that the airport has only been open for 3 years.’
‘We are confident that this will help us increase public transport usage further and improve access for our passengers across the region.’ She said the next stage of the project involved detailed rail investigations.
Details still have to be agreed with Network Rail and the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, including signalling and operating arrangements. The planning permission last for six years.
