Airport expects horse race boost

Robin Hood Airport expects an influx of private jets and a big boost to passenger and flight traffic during this year's Ladbrokes St Leger festival, the Doncaster Free Press reports.
Thousands of horse racing fans will converge on Doncaster between September 10 and 13 for the four-day spectacular at Town Moor. As well as welcoming significant numbers of Irish visitors on scheduled and charter flights, the airport will host owners and racing professionals flying in on private aircraft.
Airport managers are hoping to build on a 73% increase in aircraft activity recorded in the same period last year. Airport director Mike Morton told the newspaper: ‘The St Leger is a great occasion for the whole horse racing fraternity in the UK and Ireland. It means we are significantly busier at this time of year.'
‘The regular flights from Dublin and Belfast will be packed out with horse racing enthusiasts so we are prepared for a significant rise in numbers from our two key Irish routes. But our biggest boost is a huge increase in general aviation, which last year was up 73% during the St Leger. This is typically private planes bringing jockeys, owners and trainers to Doncaster.’
The airport is also likely to be involved in the transportation of some of the horse. However Mr Morton said arrangements around the movement of animals were usually left until closer to the meeting itself.
