Baggage handlers strike
18.10.08
Baggage handlers at Robin Hood Airport went on strike yesterday in a row over pay. They started a 24 hour walkout at midnight after failing to agree terms on overtime pay.
Staff want overtime pay when they work longer than their 37.5 hour weekly contract. However, their employer, ground services firm Servisair, will only pay overtime after 45 hours.
Union bosses said that 20 members from the T&G section of Unite were striking. John Evans regional organiser said he expected flight delays during the afternoon when the airport was busier, however, both the airport and Servisair said flights were not delayed by the action.
A Servisair spokesman said that check in staff had already accepted the offer, which would not be improved. A further 24 hours strike is scheduled to begin at midnight tomorrow (Sunday).
