Ice on runway closes Robin Hood Airport
09.12.08
Robin Hood Airport was closed this morning because of ice in the runway. Flights came to a standstill at approximately 07:30 and only resumed shortly after 09:00 as overnight rain and plummeting temperatures caused dangerous ice on the airport's runways.
The closure affected three flights including an outbound Ryanair flight to Alicante, which was cancelled. The incoming Ryanair flight from Alicante was forced to divert to Leeds Bradford Airport while a Thompson flight to Malaga was delayed by one hour.
A spokesman for the airport said: ‘We had some ice on the runway that we needed to clear for safety reasons. The runway was closed for about an hour and a half but opened just after 09:00 after we used deicer on the runway to clear it.'
