Robin Hood finally reopens
06.12.10
Robin Hood Airport reopened yesterday after the runway was cleared of snow and ice. The airport had been closed on and off since last Tuesday. It had not expected to reopen until this morning but staff managed to clear the snow and ice from the runway yesterday afternoon. A Thomson plane carrying 150 passengers to Lanzarote was the first flight to take off.
Mike Morton, the airport's director, said: ‘We have had a team of staff making sure that we get the snow cleared. In total we had 12 to 18in of snow over the last 4 or 5 days and during the evening and early hours of the morning it has dropped below freezing and started to freeze.’ He said delayed passengers had been ‘absolutely fantastic. They recognise it's a one-off and it's not an airport problem.’
